Nature Positive is an universal goal to halt the declining trend of biodiversity and to help in its recovery. We launched this project with the aim of "enabling the University of Tokyo to contribute to Nature Positive" in October 2022.

Oxford University, UNEP Youth & Education, and UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration have created a network called Nature Positive University. This network is calling on universities around the world to sign the Nature Positive Pledge and achieve the goal by using the Nature Positive Journey (a framework for thinking and acting to promote biodiversity).

Our team includes student ambassadors from Nature Positive Universities. Our purpose is to encourage the University of Tokyo in signing the Nature Positive Pledge and to report on subsequent Nature Positive initiatives at the university. We are also involved in the creation of a toolkit to guide students in achieving their Nature Positive Journey.

History of Activities to Date

In December 2022, we gave a presentation on "University Initiatives for Nature Positive" at a side event of CBD COP15 (International Conference on Biodiversity). We traveled to Canada, the host country, and participated in the event with a team of 4 students (2 undergraduate and 2 graduate students). Two workshops were held prior to the event, and discussions were held with other student ambassadors before the day of the event. In 2023, we held the simultaneous citizen survey of organisms BioBlitz on Yayoi and Komaba Campus.

Future activities

  • Conduct a biodiversity survey on university-owned lands

  • Identify the biodiversity footprint of the university

  • Set the campus biodiversity strategy and action plan

We are looking for more members interested in biodiversity conservation!

NPU project activity plan

A word from the members

I joined GXSN because I participated in the first sustainability week last year as a participant and was overwhelmed and moved by the content of the project and its initiative! I can't believe that I'm a fellow university student because of his unwavering enthusiasm and attitude of constructively accumulating results, and even after I started the project, I've learned a lot from the members and everyone who cooperated with me. !

Would you like to join us in working towards a nature positive university?

  • BioBlitz
BioBlitz takes photos of living things in a certain place and time, andThis is an event to share and identify the type. The purpose of this event was to visualize biodiversity with the university as a base for everyone in the local community.
At Yayoi BioBlitz held in April, we observed it around a baseball field.Approximately 40 people participated on the day,Approximately 250 observation records and approximately 70 species addedit was done.
At Komaba BioBlitz held in June, we observed it around the rugby field. On the dayApproximately 100 people participated,Approximately 350 observation records and approximately 70 species have been added.

  • Tokyo University Co-op Cafeteria Menu Footprint Calculation Initiatives
NPU is working with the Race To Zero project to calculate the footprint of the co-op cafeteria menu. With the cooperation of Oxford University and the co-op cafeteria, full-scale planning will begin around November.
    The calculation has begun.

  • COP28
At COP28, we participated online in the session 'Nature Positive Student Ambassadors: A Global Showcase of Student-led Campus Action for Nature' and gave a presentation on the activities of the University of Tokyo NPU Project.Currently at the University of Tokyo with NPU projectMany of the members who run the website are Nature Positive Student Ambassadors.I am registered withI was able to get such a valuable opportunity. During the sessions, participants listened to presentations about the initiatives of universities in other countries, and encouraged students to collaborate across countries and learn from each other.I was very inspired by the enthusiasm of the students from all over the world.

2024 years

  • Tokyo University Co-op Cafeteria Menu CFP Display Initiatives
For five days from January 22nd (Monday) to January 26th (Friday), we jointly participated with the Race To Zero Project in an initiative to display CFP (carbon footprint) on some menus at co-ops. Some members participated in a field trip to Choshi in August last year, and then began working on the project in earnest around late October. While many people were involved in the project, GXSN was responsible for designing the CFP display card, creating the questionnaire, and analyzing the questionnaire results.
. While receiving advice from teachers, co-op members, and people from Choshi, repeated discussions within the projectI did. Additionally, in order to supplement information that cannot be expressed through questionnaires or CFP labels, we have also set up a special page in conjunction with the implementation of the initiative. Questionnaire analysisResults in Februaryheld on the 19thPresented at a symposium.
